Last month, in August of 2013, I taught an intensive course at Shimane University’s Medical Department in Izumo. The title of the course was Global Literacy I. The idea of the course was to give students skills that they could use overseas, help give them tools to be able to speak out in certain situations, like meetings. In the end, I decided to use the book Meetings from the DELTA Business Communication Skills series (Cengage Learning).
I made the students do all of the book activities for homework before the class, so they could come to class ready to just speak and do activities based on what they had studied in the book. This worked beautifully as we were able to really get the best usage out of the limited class time we had. Students did lots of group work and short mini-presentations on things like opening and closing a meeting, introducing problems, making suggestions, introducing an agenda. All of the students worked really hard and did a great job!
Shimane University posted a few pictures with brief comments about the class on their website. Check out the pictures from my class.
